CASE HISTORY: Humane Farm Animal Care
When this nonprofit organization was formed in 2003, its Certified Humane label and the issue of humane farm animal treatment were new to U.S. meat, poultry and dairy producers, retailers and consumers. We crafted clear, well-reasoned messages, then communicated regularly with key media outlets, bloggers and market influencers about our progress. It worked.
Here’s What Happened:
- Ongoing editorial coverage in print and electronic media outlets about new Certified Humane food producers, supporting retail outlets and restaurants. Meaning… major stories in the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, Food & Wine Magazine, Saveur, Consumer Reports, Self and many regional dailies
- Inclusion of the Certified Humane label in the websites of Consumers Union and other consumer-advocacy websites
- Boosted national consumer awareness on the importance of humane treatment of farm animals
- Letters to the editor about humane farm animal treatment were published in The New York Times, Washington Post and Newsweek
- Supported growth of the organization. Over 65 companies representing hundreds of farms and millions of farm animals have been certified since 2003.
